Most often, people only have a box of Band-Aids and some Polysporin lying in a drawer and don’t bother to actually make a first aid kit.   Knowing how to do first aid and CPR is an important skill to have in an emergency situation. Of course, you hope that it should never come to that point, but preparation is key. There are certain steps you should take between finding the person and using an AED to save their life. With all of the information out there on the actions you should take, it can be overwhelming. Thankfully, the reason we get certificated is so that we do know what to do when the time comes. Keeping yourself up to date on the latest and most effective efforts is important when jumping in to save someone’s life. No matter how scary it may be, remember that simply stepping up to assist has increased that person’s chance of survival significantly. Even more so if you use an AED! Reduce your stress – Here are step-by-step instructions so you are knowledgeable if the time should come!   Finding the Individual DANGER: Search for any dangers that may affect you! It is important that before rushing in you ensure that the area is safe for yourself. RESPONSE: Is the person able to respond? If there is no immediate response, use your fingers to tap on their collar bone to see if you get a response and yell “Are you okay?” or “Can you hear me?”. If you get a response that is a good sign! If not, continue… AIRWAYS: If the victim is unconscious it is crucial that you check to make sure their airway is open. First check their mouth. They may have choked on something that you can easily remove. If there is nothing in their mouth, gently tilt their head back and lift their chin. This will allow open the person’s airway. BREATHING: Check to see if the person is breathing at all. Lean over the person and put your ear to their mouth while facing their chest. Watch for 5seconds.   Some people believe that lifesaving training is based off of common sense, and that doing a course is a once in a lifetime thing. The fact is that first aid and CPR recertification training should be something we constantly return to and learn the latest. Not only is this preparing you better for an emergency, but it is also protecting those around you by becoming the knowledgeable individual present. Over time, methods, practices, and approaches change and what we learned a few years ago in a CPR class no longer applies. Science is to thank for these changes. As we learn more about the human body and how it works, we can better understand how to assist in an emergency. Knowing the latest allows you to step in and confidently/properly help out. Not only that but it will also increase the chance of survival of the individual in need of assistance.   Changes to Past Approaches Over the years as science has developed further, approaches to first aid and CPR have changed drastically. Research has proven many past approaches to be incorrect or can cause more harm to the individual. One prime example of this is the idea of patting on the back to aid someone who is choking. This was something encouraged and thought to be helpful for many years. After a while it was understood that this was not helping and was actually causing more harm than anything. Now, it has been brought back! It was concluded that any movement is good movement when a person is choking, so back-patting is once again encouraged. Often people wonder if waiting for someone else to help a person in need is better in those times you aren’t 100% sure what you are doing. They are scared that if they do something incorrect or don’t know how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) that they will be held responsible for a person’s injuries or decease. The fact of the matter is that if you even have the slightest idea of what you are doing, you should run in without hesitation. You may be this person’s only chance of survival and it is crucial that you jump in right away. Many are afraid to use an AED because it delivers shocks to a person’s body and they believe it is more dangerous than leaving the victim alone until a professional can arrive. The stories where people have been sued by the victim because a rib was broken during assistance, also causes people to hesitate from helping someone. But for those who live in Canada, you have no need to worry. In Canada, there is a legislation that protects any volunteer who takes action to assist a person in need – The Good Samaritan Act.   What is The Good Samaritan Act? The Good Samaritan Act is a legislation that offers protection to any volunteers who provide assistance to a person that they believe to be incapable of decision, ill, or in serious harm (so long as the assistance is not negligent). The act was created to reduce the hesitation of bystanders and get them moving into action without fearing repercussions. Each province (excluding New Brunswick and Nunavut that do not currently have the Good Samaritan Act) has slightly different rules. However, these provinces encourage the right for a bystander to take action rather than waiting for professional first responders. This recipe is gluten-free, vegan, and low calorie so you don’t feel ashamed eating more than two pieces. The best part about this recipe is that you can choose whatever toppings you like! Whether you are a ham-and-pineapple person or only cheese, you can customize your pizza to your own preferences. We have all been there: work calls us in for another safety meeting to go over the standards, rules, and safety precautions. Most of us will roll our eyes, wondering why we need to continually attend these meetings. Many workers will not have experienced a time when they have needed those safety reminders, but for those that have experienced an accident, they are crucial. It is not until an accident occurs that the importance of those safety meetings comes into play, and at that moment, you’ll be thankful you know what to do.   Knowing what to do to ensure safety in the workplace is extremely important. You may scoff and joke around when your team is having a “safety moment,” but what you don’t realize is that those safety moments could be the thing saving someone’s life, adn that someone could be you. Keeping you and your team up to date is what will prevent accidents. Say, for example, someone was late to the meeting and didn’t learn that the new machinery had a few more advanced features that required more safety precautions. That person could find themselves in a serious situation because they were not up to date and could get seriously injured. Keeping your team up to date also means you can watch out for each other. If you witness one of your coworkers attempting to do something that is possibly unsafe, you will have the knowledge to intervene and stop it before an accident occurs. It is hard during the holiday season to avoid the temptation of indulging in these treats, as most times they are very unhealthy. Many holiday treats are loaded with excess sugars, butter, and fat! So what can you do to help avoid filling your body with all that bad stuff? Fill it with delicious healthier treats! Who says that cookies have to be terrible for you? This great Christmas “Healthy Almond Cinnamon Christmas Star cookies” recipe that will leave you feeling better about yourself! Avoid those overly sweet desserts this year and make a batch of your own.   Cinnamon and almond are the flavors that melt in your mouth and leave you feeling nostalgic (a late night sledding, cozy by the fire, warm blanket kind of feeling!). A great way to avoid using unhealthy butter is to use alternatives such as chia, coconut products, and almonds. Check out this healthy almond cinnamon Christmas star recipe and let the guilt wash away this season, because these cookies are better for you!   Ingredients (Recipe makes 2 full baking sheets) 2 cups Almonds (purchase pre-ground almonds if you do not have a food processor) ½ cup Coconut Sugar 1 tbsp. Chia Seeds (ground) 2 tbsp. Cold Water 2 tbsp. Maple Syrup 3 tsp. Sometimes the hardest thing is trying to figure out what dish to bring. You want to bring something delicious but also nothing too boring. Mashed potatoes have been done a million times over and roasted veggies don’t really seem to fit the bill. What you need is a delectable dish of Caramelized Sweet Potato Apple Hash Browns that fits with the cozy theme of Christmas and has the guests coming back for more!   What better dish than one that has apples AND sweet potato in it. Not only is this dish vegan, but can also be used for the Paleo diet as well as the Whole30 diet. There is no way you can go wrong with bringing this side dish to your holiday dinners!   Ingredients (Recipe made to serve 2-4) 1 large Sweet Potato (peeled and diced) 1 large Apple (pink lady or granny smith apples work well – diced) 2 tbsp. Coconut Oil 2 tsp. Coconut Oil (to be used separately) ½ tsp. Fine Grain Sea Salt ¼ – ½ tsp. Cinnamon (ground) 1 tsp. Christmas morning is filled with excitement, joy, wonder, and…. hungry tummies! Christmas breakfast is a meal that goes hand-in-hand with stockings and new presents. Many times these breakfasts can be a bit unhealthy and involve bacon, sweet waffles, and other heavy items that leave you feeling bloated before your Christmas dinner. If you are staying in this Christmas and are unsure of what to do for breakfast, have you considered vegan crepes?   Crepes are an amazing breakfast food that is easy to make and leaves you satisfied but not feeling like you over-ate. Crepes are also a great alternative to eating a ton of carbs first thing in the morning. Plus they look pretty! Get your favorite fruits for a topping, or any other savory item you would like to fill them with. Strawberries are a great fruit to put on crepes, especially for Christmas to give it that red accent on your plate. Check out this recipe for vegan crepes and keep this in mind for your Christmas or any other holiday breakfast!   Note: This recipe requires the ingredients to sit in the refrigerator for 1 hour beforehand, so make sure you wake up early enough!   Ingredients (Recipe made to serve 12) 1 cup All-Purpose Flour ¼ tsp. Salt 1 ½ cups Unflavored Soy or Almond Milk 3 tbsp. Vegetable Oil (may also use any other neutral oil used for baking) 1 tbsp. Maple Syrup (optional) 1 tsp.
