Heatstroke & Cardiac Arrest – What You Need to Know!
Heatstroke and Cardiac Arrest – What You Need to Know!
Heatstroke and Cardiac Arrest. The two may not be directly related, but they do pop up together in a Google search. The reason is because the two can be connected! Here is what you need to know about heatstroke and cardiac arrest, and what is needed to keep yourself and others safe!
How are Heatstroke and Cardiac Arrest Connected?
According to the American Family Physician (www.aafp.org), treatment for heatstroke may have the side effect of Cardiac Arrest: “Immersion cooling also may make it difficult to access a patient—a concern if the patient experiences cardiac arrest —and bradycardia as a result of the diving reflex is not uncommon”. The American Family Physician website also states that complications of heatstroke, such as damaged myocardial muscle may “result in arrhythmias or even cardiac arrest.”
So, why do we bring it up you ask?
Well… this is the time of year when people are outside and enjoying the beautiful weather, especially on the golf course. The sun is at its hottest between 1:00pm and 4:00pm and that is often the best time to be outside. That is why we believe it is important to bring attention to the fact that a bad sunburn (and the complications associated with that) is not the only thing you need to worry about. In fact, AAFT also notes that “Central nervous system injury is permanent in 20 percent of cases and is associated with poor prognosis.”

How Do You Beat the Heat?
Wondering how you can beat the heat and prevent sun burns, heatstroke, and other heat-related issues? Here are a few simple things you can do every time you head outdoors when the sun is out:
- Wear sunscreen
- Drink lots of water
- Wear a hat
- Give yourself some shade time
- Have an AED present
