An AED kit is a critical emergency response component during sudden cardiac arrests.

If you’re wondering what an AED kit is and why it’s important, you’re in the right place. This article will break down everything you need to know about AED kits, including what’s inside them and why they matter.

What’s an AED Kit?

An AED kit is a compact, portable package that includes several important items that ensure an AED can be used properly in an emergency.

While the AED itself is the main lifesaver, the items in the AED kit make it more effective while enhancing patient care and personal protection.

What’s in an AED Kit?

An AED kit contains tools and supplies to aid in AED and CPR response efforts. At First Edition, we sell an AED kit called a Fast Response Kit.FRK-G-Generic-Fast-Response-Kit-1

In it, you’ll find:

  • (x2) pairs of hypoallergenic nitrile gloves to limit germ transmission between rescuer and patient
  • (x1) pocket breathing mask to provide a barrier during mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
  • Paramedic scissors to quickly cut through clothing to access the chest
  • (x1) razor to remove chest hair for better electrode pad contact
  • (x1) large extra-absorbent paper towel to dry the patient’s chest if it’s wet

All of these items are housed in a zippered pouch that attaches securely to the handle of the AED carrying case.

Each component of an AED kit plays an important role in the emergency response process. Having all these items together ensures you are fully equipped to handle a cardiac emergency efficiently and safely.

Pro Tip: It’s a good idea to conduct regular inspections of the AED kit and its accessories. Check for visible signs of wear, damage, or expiration and replace accordingly.

How to Use an AED Kit

AED kits are designed to be user-friendly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use an AED kit effectively:

Step 1: Assess the Situation

Make sure the scene is safe. If the person is not breathing or unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.

Step 2: Get the AED & Open the AED Kit

Retrieve the AED device and other necessary items from the kit. Put on the gloves.

Step 3: Prepare the Patient

Use the scissors to cut away clothing from the patient’s chest. If the chest is wet, dry it with the paper towel provided. If the chest is hairy, use the razor to shave the areas where the electrode pads will be placed.

Step 4: Attach the Electrode Pads

Peel the backing off the electrode pads and place them on the patient’s bare chest as illustrated on the pads.

Step 5: Follow AED Instructions

Turn on the AED device. Philips AEDs provide clear, audible instructions. Follow these instructions step-by-step. The device will analyze the heart rhythm and advise if a shock is needed.

Step 6: Perform CPR if Needed

If the AED instructs you to, begin CPR immediately after delivering the shock. Continue to follow the AED’s instructions, performing chest compressions and rescue breaths as directed.

Having an AED kit can make AED and CPR efforts more effective.

Next, consider looking into different AED models and getting trained to use one. Being prepared with an AED kit and the knowledge to use it can make all the difference in an emergency.
