Heartwarming Charity – PALS
Whether we are worried about our job, upcoming school projects, or a difficult situation in our life, stress and anxiety are just a part of life. But when our stress becomes overpowering and we are left feeling overwhelmed, all-consumed, and burnt-out, it can feel like the weight of the world is on our hearts.
It is for this reason that seeking assistance to reduce stress and anxiety is crucial. There is yoga, hot tea, colouring books, and of course exercise, but what about something that is much, much cuter? Some-ONE who can reduce our stress levels significantly by simply being present. Introducing, PALS – Pet Access League Society. This wonderful and heartwarming charity is supporting Calgarians through pet therapy by sharing the wonderful healing powers that dogs and cats (and sometimes rabbits!) bring to humans. Take a look at what this amazing organization is up to and how they are making a difference to our stress levels and our hearts!
About this Charity:
“These four-legged therapists respond unconditionally, in a non-judgemental and non-threatening manner, often eliciting responses where all else has failed.”
PALS is a non-profit organization that began in 1982 when a need for enhancing quality of life was recognized. As studies have shown time and time again, animals have a significant positive impact in our lives to improve not only our mood but our health and well-being. In a study published by the American Journal of Critical Care, it was found that patients hospitalized with heart failure who received animal-assisted therapy improved in their cardiopulmonary pressures, neurohormone levels, and anxiety. This is just one heartwarming example of how pets have helped us humans. At PALS, through the bringing of pets to facilities and events, they are striving to share the love of pets to reduce stress, assist learning, boost confidence, and increase happiness. This wonderful organization is assisting Calgarians by:
- Supporting Those in Need

PALS offers all of their programs and facility visits free of charge, to ensure that everyone receives the assistance they need through pet therapy. There are currently three different programs offered: Pet Visitation Therapy Program (visit with animals to chosen facilities), Story PALS (use of animals at Calgary Public Library locations to assist children with issues reading), and Puppy Rooms (for students during exam time to reduce stress and anxiety). Why This Charity is Heart-warming:
By receiving animal therapy, our heart health improves
- Not only does stress affect our overall mental health but it affects our hearts too! When our stress levels increase so does our blood pressure. This constant pressure overtime puts strain on our hearts and our health can begin to deteriorate. It is for these reasons that it is crucial to receive therapeutic solutions, such as animal therapy, that can give us calm, and improve our mental and physical well-being.
It all comes back to the heart, and that is why we support PALS for everything they do to improve the well-being of all! If you have a pet at home, be sure to give them a hug to thank them for all that they do for you and your heart, each and every day!
